Carrying the mission of “Advance veterinary science and safeguard human health”, the college actively engages in research activities related to veterinary science and its implications for human health. Our research on animal infectious diseases and animal derived antibiotic resistance is highly regarded, and has earned broad international recognition.
From 2016-2020, the college has enjoyed a steady growth in extra-mural research funding in excess of CNY 500 million, and has yielded over 830 SCI indexed research papers with about 100 papers in high impact journals, including Nature Microbiology, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, PNAS, PLoS Pathogens, mBio, Journal of Virology, Journal of Immunology, etc. Two disciplines, Microbiology and Pharmacology & Toxicology, have entered ESI top 1% worldwide. The studies in applied veterinary biomedical sciences have led to 14 certificates of new veterinary drugs and 63 licensed patents, with a royalty revenue of CNY 127 million.
The college has developed strong research programs in animal infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, food safety, and bacterial drug resistance. The area of animal infectious diseases mainly focuses on economically important viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens that cause huge economic losses to dairy, swine and avian industry, such as African Swine Fever (ASF), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), Influenza, Brucellosis, Tuberculosis, and so on. The research on the food safety is to develop highly effective detection methods for hazardous agents (e.g., chemical, antibiotics, pathogens, hormones, etc.), whereas the area of bacterial drug resistance is committed to discovering novel mechanisms for resistance, to revealing the transmission routes along the food chain and environment, and to developing control strategies.
